Minesweeper was a Yahoo Club founded 8 Mar 2000 by Earthboar. It had a dedicated group of new players who shared game screenshots and personal records. It effectively died in 2002 when Yahoo bought eGroups.

[edit] History

Minesweeper Club was an early sweeping community on Yahoo, before the advent of Groups. Yahoo created Clubs in 1999, purchased eGroups in 2001 and merged them in 2002. All identical Clubs were renamed. This had the unpleasant effect of changing Minesweeper Club into the Minesweeper2 Group.

At first, the effect seemed minimal. 26 Mar 2002 Earthboar wrote:

Since this club became a Yahoo "Group", the title of our club changed from minesweeper into minesweeper2. But we can't get too bent out of shape, since the "minesweeper" group is the real thing, navy vessels that sweep the sea of mines!

However, after the severe decline of the group, he noted 15 Aug 2004:

"This club used to be simply 'minesweeper'. It was the first and original minesweeper game club on Yahoo...When Yahoo clubs turned into Yahoo Groups, they renamed this club 'minesweeper2'. Jerks. I did a search on Yahoo groups for 'minesweeper'. Only 10 entries came up. This group was not even in the list."

It should be noted that Minesweeper was not the first winmine Club, as on 7 Apr 2000 Earthboar advertised the existence of his new Club in Minesweeperclub, formed 11 Jan 2000. Due to keyword matching, both minesweeping Clubs disappeared in the merger. A former eGroup, Minesweeper Addicts, absorbed the competition.
