Density Board Sizes?
I play a lot of density minesweeper and recently began wondering why we use the current five board sizes in the world ranking. In particular, it makes sense to use the 8x8 and 9x9 (beginner size boards), 16x16 (intermediate size), and 16x30 (expert size); but why do we include the 24x30 grid in the rankings? I'd appreciate it if someone knew the historical reasons behind that grid size!

It's the biggest size Windows Minesweeper allows in Custom Mode.
Re: Density Board Sizes?
Good question and good answer. And I am wondering what's the maximum mines msinfo accept for each custom level. As Damien has shown, 60m or 62m on 8x8 grid is easy, so a limit is needed. Daniel Marden's 49m seems like the limit @8x8 grid? Then what are the limit of 9x9, 16x16, 16x30, 24x30? Why?
I guess: (8-1)x(8-1)=49 for 8x8? so 64 for 9x9, 225 for 16x16, 435 for 16x30, 667 for 24x30. Is that right?

Thanks for the responses!
Also, those limits you mentioned are the ones listed on the Custom Density page. However, those limits become more difficult to hit as the board size increases, so I doubt that any of the other maximum scores will be achieved.
The 8x8 maximum seems reasonable, though my best attempt only found 11 of the 15 safe squares, but my attempts with 64 mines in a 9x9 grid have not been close at all.

Strange me, I missed that page
Daniel's game is very amazing. 30m is enough for me

Re: Density Board Sizes?
pauv: see judith's post for the answer. max #mines in windows minesweeper is (height-1) * (width-1)
about 49 mines on 8*8: there are 15 mine-free squares to find but since the first click is always safe it's actually only 14 squares.
i wrote up some quick thoughts about running a macro to fake a solve on this board here:
