Minesweeper Dictionary

Post by EWQMinesweeper »

i thought it would be a nice idea to have a collection of all minesweeper terms, abreviations etc with some explanations

http://metanoodle.com/minesweeper/dictionary.html

this url is the dictionary on the old authoritative minesweeper

i am sure than we have quite some more vocabs to expand it

Nice! I was actually searching for a dictionary on the site atm. I was wondering what RQP, IOE and IOS was and now I know it.

some more terms that should be added:

path/distance: the distance in pixels you moved your cursor during a game

throughput

correctness

if someone knows what the last 2 mean and what their definition is please post here

AFAIK:
throughput = solved3bv / (total clicks - wasted clicks)
correctness = (total clicks - wasted clicks) / total clicks

so, ioe = throughput * correctness

btw, wasted click means that u for example click twice the same square, or it means click on edge of opening?

I guess wasted click is a left click which doesn't open any squares, or unflag. Clicking at the edge of opening is definitely NOT wasted click.

I think wasted click is a click which doesn't solve any 3BV. Certainly contain those clicking at the edge of opening.

If you take this definition, then throughput would be always >=1. AFAIK, throughput was designed to count exactly those clicks which do something on the board, but don't solve 3bv.

but only if you could know there was a mine there,
if you guessed it, and hit a mine, then it is not a misclick

3、废点(wasted clicks)

在已打开的方块上左键点击是废点;
a left click made on an open square is certainly wasted.

4、猜标(guested flags)

无法判断是雷的地方被你标中了,好眼力;

5、错标(misflags)

错标是指你在明确不是雷的方块上标雷;
a misflag is when you flag a square which can not have a mine for sure

6、废标(wasted clicks)

双键开空用不上的标雷是废标;
a wasted flag is a flag which is not used to open squares with a double-click

7、退标(unflags)

退标则是当你把标对的雷又取消了;
unflag is when you remove a flag already correctly placed

8、短考(hesitations)

短考是有1秒以上的时间没有任何点击;“你在动脑筋”!
hesitation is a 1 second pause without clicking

9、长考(long hesitations)

长考则指3秒以上的时间里没有任何点击;“鼠标掉地了”!
long is a 3 second pause

[playing for] Consistency - playing with the goal to finish as many games per time as possible.
a misflag is when you flag a square which can not have a mine for sure
Not necessarily, I might have to guess and I could be assuming that there is a flag there deliberately.
Or do you mean that the square will never have a mine?

And I wouldn't fix the hesitations that much, for me it always depends on the situation, if I'm going for speed, (half) a second is long, if I'm going for consistency, completely normal and sometimes even short (I get sup80 games when I play for consistency sometimes - see http://www.minesweeper.cc/singlesite/points.html and look at the exp games in session one - I got a 57 and an 82 :P ).

Nice collection though!

re: throughput / correctness

wasted clicks are all clicks that have no impact on the board, i.e. after the click is performed the board is in the same state as it was before.
these include: clicks on opened squares, ineffective double clicks, (may also include inefficiently performed double clicks, i.e. not 1.5 technique, not sure though)

throughput is supposed to measure the theoretical efficiency of your solve, i.e. the efficiency that you would have if all your clicks hit their target as intended. through efficient use of flags and double clicks this can obviously be greater than 1.

correctness on the other hand is the efficiency of your execution. if all clicks hit their target this is 1, but usually it is smaller.

The product of these two measures give IOE.

There's 'version.txt' file in arb distribution, and it's strongly recommended to spend a few min and read my broken english :)
