UK Tournament - 20 June 2009

Post by thefinerminer »

The UK 2009 tournament will take place at Stirling University, in Stirling (Scotland).
Details will be posted here and http://www.minesweeper.info/tournaments ... ation.html.

Information about passports and travel visas are in the topic "Possible UK 2009 Tournament".
(Albania and Russia needs visas, Europeans need ID, Americans need passports).

Please email Damien (damienalexmoore at yahoo dot com) about accomodation and if you can come. Hope to see you there!

Heya! Great job Damien. It was the best possible weekend for me :P since very few swedes would fly away that weekend (it's the year's biggest holiday for them here, Midsummer) so the plane tickets are really cheap :).

I don't have that many vacation days for the trip but i was thinking of sth like flying to Edinburgh on Wednesday 17th evening, spend a night there somewhere, visit town on Thursday then take the train to Stirling in the afternoon/evening. Hang out with you guys Friday to Sunday then leave early on Monday for Glasgow for a fast tour there too then take the plane home in the evening. I know that one single day won't do any of the two big cities justice but it's about the most i can do...

I will surely need the letter you mentioned for the Visa. I'll send you an e-mail about that.

One question about the accomodation... you mentioned two places, one at the campus and one downtown. Where/how far is the campus situated? Is it way off (here in the nordic countries it often lies in an own "suburb" far away) or is it within the city (like in Vienna and Budapest)?
Either way, I am a social person so sharing a room at the hostel would be real fun =D, but I have nothing against the Uni if many people choose to stay there instead...

See you soon!
joni

Btw. I am, as always, coming mainly to meet people and visit Scotland... I'd be happy if I finish any games at the tourney at all =D. Maybe I can do a Stephan Bechtel and win the NF section because there are no other competitors :D

just bought my flight tickets, damien...you can add my name to the list of participants ;)

EDIT: did you think of getting a sponsor for the name of the tournament, damien? it could be sth like 'THE (XYZ Company) Minesweeper World Championship' ...just a suggestion

I might come, seing as I want to go by train though and that takes a little long, it might collide with my graduation.

If that happens, I'll think about flying, and if I can afford it I probably will come. Otherwise, it's pretty probable that I'll participate.

Can't say for sure now though.

I have good news. As things stand at the moment, the chances of my being there is looking good. It's gonna cost me approx 770 pounds (R 10 000) to stay in stirling from 19 to 23/25 June spending money and everything. Between me and my parents we should be able to russle up approx 300 pounds leaving only 470 to sponsorship. I think the uni might be willing to put that up seeing that the previous time their sponsorship was 1000 pounds.

Wish me luck!! :D

P.S. Do you guys think I'm correct to call this this year's world champs?

EDIT: Okay, maybe a hundred pounds more, cause I'll have to fly to Edinburgh to actually get to Stirling in time. See the thing is my last test in 08:00 on the 19th meaning I can't fly earlier.

As I heard today, it is pretty improbable that I can come because I will most probably either have an important exam directly before or after the tournament, which means that I'd either have to study while on my way and actually, all the time around the tournament, which I dont want to do and therefore probably wont, or fly in order to get there in time.
I'm considering flying, but unfortunately, I'll know when my exam is less than 2 weeks before the tournament, so no way to plan ahead and get cheap tickets :(

So probably no way I'll be able to make it

I am COMING!!!!!

The uni agreed to sponsor the approx 740 euro for the airfare, which is great!! When I went to actually book the flight the price of the ticket had gone down by almost 100 euro, which means the uni's money is gonna cover the Visa as well. :D

I've started preparing, and it seems that I will be bringing it this year

See you in Stirling :geek:

great to hear that Bertie!

i'm going to the embassy on Monday... let's see what they have to say.

@alex: i doubt you "need" to register at all, as long as you get there before the tourney starts =)

Luke Sullivan asked me on facebook if i am going to write a 'who's going to win the uk open 2009' report just like there is one for the last budapest tourny...@damien: may i :?:  ;)

@bertie, joni and whoever else who is taking part in the uk open and reads this: when do you arrive in stirling, where will you stay and shouldn't we discuss that in a safer place than a forum? (PM me)

Safer place hahahah you're afraid of any atentat? I think the more open the discussion the easier for people to meet in the same place later.

I have no idea where i'm staying (I noticed Damien hasn't really answered my questions as to where these places are locate) and i am open to proposals... dorm room would have been fun, if we can fill it.

Btw, I'm getting back my passport on friday, hopefully with a UK visa in it..-

  :o :o

the willy wallace youth hostel is 150m away from the train station. the uni is about 1km north of both.

i'll arrive on friday at around 10pm in stirling :P

@joni: not really afraid of that but i think that stuff like eg our mobile phone numbers shouldn't be posted here in a forum...
